tld

To make it simple, a domain name is the website/homepage internet address. For example, www.kkboss.com . The “kkboss.com” is the domain name. the “www” in front of the domain name simply means “World wide Web”…or “this is a website”.

In the domain name, the “.com”  is the TLD…or Top Level Domain. There are many TLD, such as “.net”, “.org”, “.asia”, “.edu”, etc. Many countries have cTLD too, such as “.com.my” is for Malaysia, “.edu.sg” is for Singapore…and so on.

So a domain name is a unique name plus TLD/cTLD. A website URL can be either www.kkboss.com or kkboss.com, because by default, the “www” can be ignored if you type kkboss.com in the web browser address bar.

Every website must have a domain name because it is unique and is only for your website. Therefore if your company name is Massive Dynamic Sdn Bhd. You may want to use a domain name such as massivedynamic.com . But if someone else already use that domain name, you cannot use massivedynamic.com. But you have many alternative, such as massivedynamic.net, massivedynamic.com.my and so on. It all depends on whether you can accept a domain name which is not a “.com”

Last time, people think that “.com” is for “Commercial”, “.org” is for non-profit organisation. Nowadays, this practise no longer “strictly applied”. Everyone can use “.com”, as long as it is available for registration. No one will sue you for using a “.com” for your domain name.
